Ability, Schooling Inputs and Earnings: Evidence from the NELS
نویسنده
چکیده
Utilizing the National Educational Longitudinal Study data, this paper examines the role of pre-market cognitive and noncognitive abilities, as well as schooling inputs, on young mens earnings. In addition to the conditional mean, we estimate the impacts over the earnings distribution using recently developed (instrumental) quantile regression techniques. Our results show that noncognitive ability is an important determinant of earnings, but the e¤ects are not uniform across the distribution. We nd noncognitive ability to be most e¤ective for low earners. Cognitive ability, on the other hand, does not yield any impact either at the mean or at the distributional level once we control for educational attainment. We also nd that, on average, pupil-teacher ratio is a signi cant determinant of earnings. However, similar to noncognitive ability, the e¤ects are not homogeneous. JEL: C10, C14, J24, I21, I28

The objective of this paper is to exploit the unique information on cognitive ability contained in the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) data, for an in depth examination of the importance of cognitive skills for heterogeneous individuals using: (a) a quantile regression methodology which allows for an interaction between schooling and cognitive skills and (b) Instrumental Variables es...

Mincer wage equations focus on the earnings premium associated with additional schooling for a cross section of individuals of different ages but generally fail to account for changes in education quality over time. More fundamentally, school attainment is an inadequate proxy of individual skills, when both family inputs and ability affect cognitive skills. We combine quality-adjusted measures ...

This paper examines the effects of the predictive ability of accruals and cash flows on earnings quality in Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE). In this study we have used two methods: cross-section and pooled for testing hypothesis. The results show that Sloan model has the strongest ability to predict future earnings, and cash component earnings have more ability than accruals component earnings for ...
متن کاملHeterogeneity in returns to schooling: Econometric evidence from Ethiopia
The paper investigates whether returns to schooling in Ethiopia vary across the wages distribution of individuals. To do so it adopts an instrumental variables quantile regression framework that allows for both endogeneity of schooling resulting from unmeasured ability, and possible heterogeneity in the impact of schooling. The empirical estimates indicate that education contributes more to the...

This paper surveys the recent literature on the causal relationship between education and earnings. I focus on four areas of work: C theoretical and econometric advances in modeling the causal effect of education in the presence of heterogeneous returns to schooling. C recent studies that use institutional aspects of the education system to form instrumental variables estimates of the return to...
